Joe and Katherine Jackson moved the children from Gary, Indiana, to Los Angeles and purchased the Hayvenhurst property in 1971. The family posed for Life magazine that year; the shoot was later described by the photographer as carefully managed and polite.
Michael bought Hayvenhurst from his father in the early 1980s and spent two years renovating it, adding a Japanese koi pond, a private movie theater, a faux candy store and an ornate Snow White diorama. He lived at the estate for 17 years, releasing Off the Wall and Thriller and shooting his first Rolling Stone cover while based there. Though he bought a three-bedroom condo in the early 1980s, he stayed to be near his mother before moving to Neverland Ranch in 1988.
