In 2005 Bubbles moved to the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Fla., where he lives today. Caretakers describe him as affectionate and playful: he naps, paints, eats sweet potatoes, enjoys flute-and-guitar music and likes stashing items in Velcro backpacks. Staff say he weighs about 170 pounds and lives in a group while helping raise younger chimps. The Jackson estate has continued to contribute to his care, according to the sanctuary.
Over the years Bubbles crossed paths with celebrities and made headlines for playful — and occasionally bitey — encounters. He also inspired art events at the sanctuary and appears in the biopic Michael via CGI, while the real Bubbles stays at the Center for Great Apes.
