McKidd, who exits the series this season after portraying Dr. Owen Hunt since 2008, recalled his early days on the show: meeting Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) at the elevators with Richard Webber, feeling intimidated but welcomed. He said Dempsey introduced him to Dane, who quickly stood out for a dry, hilarious sense of humor. "He’s missed," McKidd said.

What we know about Dane

Eric Dane died in February at 53. A death certificate cited respiratory failure with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) listed as an underlying cause; he had publicly revealed the diagnosis nearly a year earlier. Dane is survived by his wife Rebecca Gayheart and daughters Billie Beatrice, 16, and Georgia Geraldine, 14. McKidd also paid tribute on Instagram, writing, "Rest in peace, buddy."
