The Veil Reborn

Elizabeth Emanuel, who co-created Diana’s gown in a small Mayfair studio, supervised a faithful recreation of the veil she calls the “Veil of Light.” Emanuel says the piece gives the dress an airy, twinkling finish and that the gown has never felt fully complete without it. The original veil once stretched about 40 feet from Diana’s head and was displayed with her Spencer tiara; the dress itself featured a 25-foot train.

A Handcrafted Labor of Love

For authenticity Emanuel returned to Hand & Lock in London, where artisans hand-sewed countless tiny sequins across the fabric and worked from original measurements. She provided fragments from the same loom and asked for dimensions as close as possible to the original; because of its size the veil had to be produced in stages.
