How the film explains Patricia’s absence

The movie addresses Patricia’s missing presence by saying she is on a lecture tour and may be coping with the loss of her husband, who was killed in a car accident at the end of the second film. No one was recast; instead new characters arrive, most notably Taraji P. Henson as Roselyn, a powerful businesswoman connected to the group.
